The Mustang Challenge will travel to Las Vegas in the fall of 2019! The event will be held at the Horseman's Park in Las Vegas, Nevada from November 1st thru 3rd. For the first time in Las Vegas youth and adult trainers will compete for $50,000. The competition is in-hand only. Youth trainers ages 8-17 are eligible to adopt a 12-24-month old mustang or burro to train and Adult trainers are eligible to adopt an adult or yearling mustang or burro. Applications are available to be submitted via mail or email. Pickup location is Ridgecrest, CA, date to be announced. It is possible that we may add another pickup location. -Do I need to be a TIP trainer to compete?-
*Nope! Anyone is eligible to apply to compete.
-Do I need to be a professional trainer to compete?-
*Nope! We welcome anyone to apply, even first time mustang/burro trainers are welcome!
-What animals are eligible to compete?-
*In the TIP Challenge mustangs and burros will be preselected by you on a first application in first application get first dibs basis.
*For the Open any branded BLM mustang or burro may compete. Offspring conceived in the wild by a branded mare or jenny may also compete with documentation as proof.
-How do I select which animal I want?-
*whoever gets their applications in first gets put down in that order of priority of animal selection. When photographs are taken of animals in either late May/early June they will be posted and shared with all applicants. Applicants select their top 15 choices in order they desire most and submit to us. Get your applications in early to get the animal you want!
-How do I get my animal-
*On July 19&20th you will adopt and pick up your animal from BLM Corrals in Palomino Valley, NV outside Reno, NV. You will confirm which date and time window you choose with host prior to pick up date. Cost is $125 for adults and $25 for youth.
**If you will have difficulty getting to Palomino Valley for pick up please contact host Amber or Rebecca for other possible arrangments.
-How do I know I have been accepted to compete?-
*We will notify you 2-3 weeks after entries close of your acceptance and which horse or burro you have been awarded.
-What does it cost to compete in the TIP Challenge?-
*There are no class fees or entry fee. You do have to pay to adopt your animal, $125 for adults and $25 for youth payable to BLM at pickup. Your stall and one bag of shavings will be provided by host along with a shared tack stall. If you want a private tack stall you will need to pay for that yourself at a rate of $30 a day. If you want extra shavings you will need to order those or bring your own. You will need to provide all feed, care and health costs related to your animal during training and at competition. You will need to get your animal to the competition. You will need to pay for your own lodging.
-What does it cost to compete in the Open Show?-
*Each class of the open show is $30. Stalls are $30 per night and host will provide one bag of shavings at no cost. Additional bags of shavings can be ordered on entry form or brought in by competitor. This is just like any other horse show.
-Where do I stay?-
*There are a limited number of RV hookups with water and electric or just water at the show. These will need to be reserved ahead of time. If you plan on staying in your trailer you will need to purchase an RV hook up spot. There are hot showers and bathrooms at the showgrounds. There are two hotel/casinos within walking distance with special pricing for contestants. Please refer to document under “files” tab on the Facebook group.
-Can I bring other horses to the show even if they aren’t showing?-
*Yes, but please notify host prior to doing this and all horses must have a negative Coggins and current health certificate.
-Can I bring alcohol to the show?-
*No, there will not be any alcohol allowed on the show grounds. There are plenty of other places to drink it in Fabulous Las Vegas though!
-Will there be food available for purchase at the show?-
*Yes, we plan on having local food trucks come in to provide food for purchase.
-Will youth be competing against the adults?-
*No, there will be two separate divisions. Youth will be pinned and awarded separate from adults. In the TIP Challenge burros will be pinned separate from horses. In the OPEN show burros will compete against horses in the in-hand division. In the OPEN show youth will be pinned separate from adults.
-What if I don’t want to bring my animal back home with me?-
*There will be an auction at the end of the competition for those competitors who want to sell their animal. It is not a requirement. We highly encourage you to find an adopter prior to the competition if you do not want to keep your animal. BLM will be present to reassign animals. Trainer keeps all proceeds from sale minus the BLM transfer fee.
-Is the prize money guaranteed?-
*No, prize money is contingent upon number of animals picked up. Prize money is projected based on number of animals approved. If more animals are picked up there will be more prize money. If less picked up there will be less prize money. Get out and tell your friends! More animals picked up more prize money!
-How can I make money?-
*Every trainer who makes it to the competition will receive $200 from the host. There will be a breakdown of prize money and how it is awarded after pick up in July when we know how much money we have in the pot. It will be e-mailed to all competitors. The Open show already has breakdown of prize money listed on the show entry form.
-Is there any benefit to me entering early?-
YES! For the TIP Challenge early entries have a better chance of getting the animal they want because they get first dibs! For the Open show early entries get $5 off each class they enter! Enter the Open show before October 1st for the discount.
-What classes will there be in the TIP Challenge?-
*the TIP Challenge will consist of 4 separate in hand classes. Handling and Conditioning, Pattern, Trail and Freestyle. Please search on Facebook for examples of each. Class patterns and schedules will be posted after pick up.
-Who will the judges be?-
*Currently we have four mustang judges scheduled to judge. They are Wylene Wilson Davis, Nate Eicher, Luke Castro and Jeff Cook. This may change but that is the current plan.
